❁ Turquoise Facts:
- Is this Turquoise stabilized? Yes! Most of the Turquoise on the market today has been treated with plastic bonding, chemical vapor penetration, paraffin or some other stabilizing agent to help the material retain the shape and its bright color. It is estimated that less than 10% of mined turquoise can be used without some sort of treatment – though this does vary somewhat from mine to mine. Without treatment, most turquoise will fall apart and will absorb chemicals from its environment and change to a greenish color over the years, owing to the porous nature of the gem. Nevada Turquoise is generally higher quality and often a much lower percentage of the mine production requires treatment.
- Tuquoise in the Mohs Scale of hardness: Turquoise ranks 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale and its toughness is generally Fair to Good.
- Cleaning Turquoise: Cleaning: It’s safe to clean turquoise jewelry with warm, soapy water, but it should never be cleaned with steam or ultrasonic cleaners. Some turquoise is treated to improve its surface appearance. Heat or solvents can damage the treated surfaces.
