Business Leader or Artist

What are you good at?

One of the most difficult things to concede to is the idea that “I can not do everything”. Or at least the fact that I can not be great at everything.

So often we are over flowing with ideas, but putting them into play as one big symphony can be a dauntless task. In our travels, we meet so many talented people that have true gifts when it comes to creating. They are the ones that when you see their work, you feel so inspired and even honored to have met them. Ironically, these same artists and designers often fall short of organization, promotion or other key elements to having a successful business. And when we do meet one that seems to have everything flowing, almost invariably we can look next to them and see a partner or employee who’s skills help bring it all together.

Oh how wonderful life would be if we could do it all. Create, organize, motivate and labor for our passion. Regrettably, this is seldom if ever the case. We need others who can help us become better at what we are best at. We need others that have skills that can help build us up to a level where we can create unhindered.

If you feel you are stuck in the growth of your business, here are a few ideas that may help you.

Make a list of all tasks completed on a daily basis in your business.

Examples:

A. Planning and Development (Planning and implementing a business plan)

B. Design and Concept (Identify hot products and components to work with and designing)

C. Fabrication and production (Creating)

D. Management (who, what, when, where, how)

E. Marketing Online (website, newsletters, social media, ads,)

F. Marketing Shows  (doing shows)

E. Marketing Other (all marketing activities)

Once you have made a specific list of the above tasks, then you can assign a number of priority based on you ability.

I am very good at this / *****

I am good at this / ****

I can do this / ***

I can do this but it takes me too much time / **

I can not do this / *

Now that you have a list of your strengths and weaknesses, start planning your day accordingly.

Immediately find a way to delegate any “1” star tasks. This is the area that can hinder your growth more than anything else. Finding the right person can be difficult, but it is possible if you are diligent in your efforts.

Once you have someone helping with 1 star tasks, then you can move on to delegating two star tasks. And so on and so on. You may get lucky and find someone who is okay at half of your daily tasks which in turn will free you up to concentrate on the tasks your best at. Just keep searching and it will come together for you. If you are the creative person “Right Side Brain”, then you need the opposite of yourself. You know, that “Left Side Brain” person.

Don’t keep waiting for the right person to come do everything though, start slowly and before you know it, you will have the help you need.
