Tagua Nuts are shaped into little beads that remind us of “River Beads and for that reason, we called this collection the “Tagua River Beads Collection”. Each bead is cut by hand and shaped to make a perfect bracelet. The Tagua Beads are then strung in a very strong elastic cord, making it easier to wear. The Tagua Bracelets are adjustable and will fit most wrists. We design all our Tagua Beads and they are handmade in South America by local artists in a fair trade supported business. The Tagua beads are shipped to us and bracelets are assembled in the USA.

Tagua Nuts are a very important trade in South America and many artisans are 100% dependent on this market. The nuts are harvested locally and assembled into several different market lines, from crafts to construction. There is no waste when working Tagua nuts; whatever is left from the bead production is used as charcoal for fire, the powder is used to feed farmed animals and shells used as compost. Tagua nut palm leaves are often used in the roofing to cover small houses and small workshops.
The beautiful thing about this market is that NO tree is cut in order to use the nuts and the trees will produce seedpods for several years. Local people are highly motivated to grow these trees for financial reasons, but also to stopping logging and mining in some areas of the Andes.
1. Our Tagua beads:
Our Tagua nuts, Tagua beads, and Tagua slices are 100% handmade from the cutting to the polishing and touched by the hands of an artisan. Some beads will show brown spots, which is part of their natural bark. They will also present a marbled design in the center that gives them a great and unique look. The marbled effect is natural and is nothing more than the “growth rings” that are accentuated with the heat. The same thing is shown in wooden pieces.
2. What’s Tagua Nut?
In a short description, Tagua Nut, also known as Vegetable Ivory, is the seed that comes from Phytelephas Macrocarpa palm tree that grows in the tropical rainforest of South America. Tagua nuts grow in large spike clusters, reminding a honey cone with many nuts inside. They are pure cellulose and before the nuts mature, they are soft and can be eaten – they taste just like a fresh coconut. I have tasted them!
Many Tagua nuts present a crack in the center due to the drying process and the density is very close to the density of ANIMAL IVORY. Tagua is replacing the slaughter of mammal ivory (elephants and other) in the textile and fashion industries. In one year, one Tagua Nut palm produces as much ivory as an average female African elephant. No HARM is done to nature and the Tagua Nut production market employs hundreds of families.
